Saturday April 17 was another opportunity for Ghanaians to show their love, respect and admiration for one of the country’s biggest icon, Azumah Nelson at the screening of a new documentary that celebrates the life and journey of the boxing legend. The media, fans, family and friends in the boxing fraternity turned out in their numbers to witness ‘Zoom Zoom, the Professor’. ‘Zoom Zoom, the Professor’ written and produced by Atlanta-based Ghanaian filmmaker, Sam Afua Kessie follows the humble story of a man who believed in himself and became arguably the greatest boxer to come out of Africa. With highlights of rare footage and interviews from Azumah and many others in the sport, the documentary was the true testament of the legend’s career. With the same cocksureness that characterized his career, through which he often predicted exactly how far his bouts would travel, Azumah sparked humour and admiration amongst patrons as he recounted some of his fights in the documentary. It was no wonder the audience shouted the popular ‘Like Father and Son’ exclamation intermittently through out the screening. The screening was marked with several speeches including one by the legend himself; David Harper, CEO of Geodrill Ghana Limited and sponsor of the documentary; Sam Kessie and a few others. Patrons also had the opportunity to take photos with the legendary boxer. DVD copies of the documentary were auctioned in support of the Azumah Nelson Foundation, a 23 million dollar project aimed at providing social services to the poor and needy through the use of sports and education. The DVD copies would soon be made available nationwide.
