MINUTES OF MEETING HELD BY SPOSA AT THE GBC CLUB HOUSE

MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 25TH MARCH, 2012 AT GBC CLUB HOUSE

The meeting was called to order at 3:44pm with the opening prayer offered by Conqueror Frank Kofi Ayivor.
Minutes of the previous meeting was read. The House agreed to waive reading the entire minutes to save time, but status on key action points be shared going forward. It was discussed that detailed minutes would be available on facebook and the website for perusal by every Spacan.

COMPUTER DEBT ISSUES
The Committee on the Debt Issue with the insurance company reported that members had scheduled a meeting with the management of the company for March 27, 2012 at 10.00am. The Headmaster, Welfare chairman of SPACO, head of the Debt Committee (Vice President) and the President would attend the meeting. Updates would later be shared with all members.

TEACHER ABSENTEEISM
Teacher absenteeism on campus: Investigations indicated that teachers did not actually vacate post as was reported initially but rather they used their free periods for off campus teaching. The only worry was the impact on marking student’s scripts in time and running extra classes etc. The president promised to have a discussion with the staff at Spaco on this observation and would recommend that they should not allow their off campus work to distract them from focusing attention on the students. An eye would be kept on this issue and if the right things are not done, then people would bear the consequences of their own actions.

PROJECT SUPPORT
Third issue discussed was the fund raising methods to be used for the project mentioned. The president shared the plan with the house and indicated that year groups were going to be tasked to contribute GH¢1,500 each. He also mentioned that the main source of funds for the project would come from the year groups. Thus year groups that are not up yet or exist but inactive should make it a point to get together and start something. The year groups start from 1979 through to 1998.
The president also mentioned that foreign branches i.e USA and the United Kingdom had also been levied and that he was in touch with a Conqueror in Belgium, who had mentioned that there were a number of Spacans there. The Belgian branch had pledged to help Spaco. The Diaspora branches will contribute GH¢2,000 each.

FUND RAISING
The president shared a time frame of three months for the mobilisation of funds and one year as the project start to finish period. He also indicated that as soon as a quarter of the amount was realised, he would initiate a sod cutting ceremony for the project to commence.
Other means of raising funds were discussed such as writing to corporate bodies and also identifying conquerors in good positions that could help with additional funding.
In that vein, the president said he was in touch with a conqueror promoter of a foundation (Ngorli Foundation), who had already pledged support for the project.
The project managers in charge of the mobilisation of funds and implementation of project are yet to be appointed and teams formed. In the interim the executives are running the project.
There was a lengthy debate about the formation of year groups and SSS stream. The SSS 1993 to 1996 year groups reported they had a difficulty as to where to identify themselves. It was finally agreed that those year groups find their year of completion and join the O&A level groups. Therefore, if one finished SSS in 1993, that person can join the O&A level group of 1991|1993, if one finished SSS 1994, the group to belong to would be the O&A level group of 1992|1994 and so on.
Conqueror Frank promised to draw up the pairing of year groups and share with the executive.
It was also suggested that those who would not be comfortable with the above arrangement can go ahead to form their own groups. The president mentioned that the website was being developed to ensure that each year group had its space and members would be able to complete registration online to become members of their groups. That would enable ease of contacting members and lubricate the formation process.

SCHOOL GRADING
On the issue of the grading of the school, it was clarified that the school is graded ‘B’ but not the ‘C’ as mentioned during the previous meeting. It was mentioned that grade B is not a bad position even though the desirable grade is A. Hence the situation is not alarming. However, all Spacans should get their shoulder to the wheel in all the plans of the association so as to achieve that prestigious status.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE ATTIGBOR
On the death of the former headmaster, the late M.K. Attigbor, the welfare chairman updated the house that the funeral was scheduled for the 25th and 26th of May. Also details on our role as old students and what we intend to do would be planned and shared with the house at the next meeting.

LECTURES ON SECURITY
ASP Seth Sewornu and ASP Lawson Samuel gave an insightful presentation on the various basic offences and the penalty units accompanying them. The aim of the presentation was to help people avoid such offences.
They also touched on the new types of crimes and cautioned that people needed to be law abiding citizens since we do not know what would happen in the nearest future be it political,
The police officers wanted people to be security conscious in every aspect of their lives, including one’s own personal environment, people, vehicle numbers and dressing.

WEBSITE UPDATE
Conqueror Seth Otis Oteng gave a brief update on the website. He told the House that new additions had been made on the site and there was more the team would do. He briefed the house on some important navigation tips round the website such as the webmail, chat, book, facebook and Calendar.
The president also encouraged members to patronise the site so that they may be fully informed on the happenings at the school and SPOSA. Conqueror Dzakpasu also congratulated those who visited the site regularly and also thanked those who joined him in the chat room to discuss certain topical issues.
The school anthem was sung and the closing prayer said.
